TES fourth grade students have books published

Staff Report

A group of fourth-grade students at Tucumcari Elementary School had a book of original written stories and illustrations published as part of a class project in its second year.

Students in Shasta Cordova's fourth-grade class each were required to write, edit and illustrate at least one story throughout the year.

“Writing is a huge part of the curriculum within this specific classroom,” Cordova said.

Cordova said the students spent the first half of the year producing stories, poems, and journal entries in preparation for the project. She said for the second semester, students were told to choose one topic they'd like to expand on to put into the book. The stories range from superhero adventures to personal stories, Cordova added.

Cordova said students then compiled their work and submitted it to be published through a free publishing kit from Student Treasures publishing company. She said once published the student’s parents have the opportunity to purchase books.

Cordova said she plans to continue the project.
