Lady Longhorns salvage loss

Logan salvaged a stinging loss to Melrose on Friday by defeating state-ranked Tatum 65-47 in the third-place game Saturday of the Plateau EPAC Tournament at Eastern New Mexico University at Portales.

The Lady Longhorns (13-2) seized a 27-8 lead in the first quarter and commanded a 41-17 advantage at halftime.

Logan coach Glynna Stand said Saturday her team "played much better tonight." She added her squad "wasn't ready last night for whatever reason, but it's always a good thing when they refocus and bounce back after a disappointment."

Karli Webb led the Lady Longhorns with 20 points, while Harlie Roach added 14 and Jordan Hines 13.

Tatum, ranked No. 3 in Class 1A by MaxPreps.com, dropped to 9-3 overall. Celeste Jimenez paced Tatum with 11 points.

Melrose 49, Logan 45

Melrose knocked off top-seeded and district foe Logan 49-45 in the semifinals Friday of the Plateau EPAC Tournament at Eastern New Mexico University.

Webb led the Lady Longhorns with 20 points.

From late in the first quarter until early second, a 14-10 Lady Buffaloes lead remained unchanged on the Greyhound Arena scoreboard. It finally became 15-10 not far into the second quarter, before Logan went on a 7-0 run to grab a two-point lead.

Then it was Melrose's turn to go on a run, this one 14-0 including in order - a foul shot by Hailey Martin, a steal and layup from Nataley Mondragon, an off-the-dribble three-point bank shot from Mondragon after a Brette DeVaney steal, a Shannon May putback just before the halftime buzzer and another Martin foul shot to begin the third-quarter scoring.

When the surge was over, Melrose led 24-17.

Logan was behind much of the second half. The Lady Longhorns trailed just 43-40 in the final period, but Melrose's Kiki Roybal and two Brette DeVaney foul shots gave it insurance with 38 seconds left.

The Buffaloes improved to 8-3 overall.

Floyd 50, Grady 42

Teryn Foote scored 13 points in a losing effort Friday during a 50-42 loss to Floyd in the consolation round Friday of the Plateau EPAC Tournament at Eastern New Mexico University.

Morgan Becerra added 11 points for the Lady Bronchos, who fell to 2-11 overall.

Floyd improved to 3-6.

Fort Sumner 55, Grady 16

The Vixens overwhelmed the Lady Bronchos 55-16 during the consolation round Thursday of the Plateau EPAC Tournament at Eastern New Mexico University.

Becerra and Foote each led Grady/San Jon/House with four points apiece.

Fort Sumner improved to 6-7.

Portales JV 42, Grady 36

Foote scored 14 points for the Lady Bronchos during a 42-36 loss Wednesday to the Portales junior-varsity team during the first round of the Plateau EPAC Tournament at Melrose.
