Another leg for Tucumcari senior

Tucumcari senior Jaxon Arguello on Thursday earned his second of three legs required to qualify for the state tournament during the nine-team NMMI Invitational at Roswell.

Arguello shot a 79; the qualifying score was 80.

Other Tucumcari scores from the boys team: Malachi Anaya 90, Rod Dunlap 107 and Andrew Clark 121 for a total of 397. Clovis won the meet with a team score of 329.

Tucumcari coach Marty Garcia said because of an leg injury Isaac Arias suffered the previous week, he promoted two players from the junior varsity.

Lenora Trujillo competed for the Tucumcari girls but did not place.

On April 22, Anaya missed earning a leg for a state-tournament berth by three strokes, shooting an 81 at the Los Alamos Invitational.

For Tucumcari, Arguello shot an 88, Andrew Sandoval 98, Dunlap 104 and Clark 113 for a 371 team score at the 11-team meet, finishing fourth.

Los Alamos won the meet with a 324 score. Hope Christian finished runner-up with a 334, and Grants was third at 340.

The long girls competitor for Tucumcari was Trujillo, who shot at 128.

On April 15 at the 14-team Spring River Golf Course meet in Roswell, Arias earned his first state-qualifying leg but was injured the next day playing baseball. He will be sidelined indefinitely.

Arias shot an 80 to match the qualifying score. Other Tucumcari scores were Anaya 93, Arguello 95, Sandoval 99 and Jeremiah Cordova 112 for a team total of 367.

Deming won the meet with a 321 team score, edging Lovington by one stroke.
