Logan boys take district loss Saturday

The Logan boys basketball team’s 34-20 deficit at halftime proved too much to overcome during a 66-53 district loss Saturday at Fort Sumner.

“(We) dug ourselves a hole in the first half and spent the rest of the game trying to dig out of it,” Logan coach Kyle Griffiths said. “Guys fought hard; just came up short.”

Dante Sanchez scored 20 points to lead the Longhorns. Matthew Norman added 10 for Logan, who fell to 13-11 overall and 3-4 in Class 1A’s District 6.

Fort Sumner, in second place in the district standings with a 5-2 record and one game remaining in the regular season, improved to 14-10 overall. The Foxes were ranked sixth last week in Class 1A by MaxPreps.com.

Top-ranked Melrose (21-1) remains in first place in the regular-season district standings with a 5-0 record.

Grady/San Jon 62, Clovis Christian 52

Grady/San Jon’s 17-3 outburst in the fourth quarter led to a 62-52 come-from-behind district victory over visiting Clovis Christian on Thursday.

Chisum Rush led the Bronchos with 20 points and Isaiah Mitchell added 11. Tobe Slater scored six of his eight points in the critical fourth quarter.

Grady/San Jon coach Jonathan Langan said a defensive adjustment proved crucial for his team’s win.

“We got after them in a half-court trap the fourth quarter, and they didn’t handle it well,” he said. “I think that, and making easy buckets down the stretch, was the difference.”

The Bronchos improved to 11-9 overall and 3-3 in District 6. Clovis Christian fell to 9-15, 0-7.
