Buffs edge Longhorns in overtime

The Logan boys basketball team failed to score for more than two minutes of overtime, which proved to be the difference in a 79-74 district loss Saturday at Melrose.

The Longhorns also went scoreless for almost the final two minutes of regulation, including a last-second shot from point guard Brock Burns.

“We had a shot to win it in regulation that just didn’t fall,” Logan coach Kyle Griffiths said.

“In overtime, the game was back-and-forth until the last minute, when Melrose hit some big free throws down the stretch.”

The Buffaloes went 8-for-13 from the free-throw line in the final two minutes of OT.

“In games like that one, one or two plays that go your way can determine the outcome. We had several chances, but the ball just didn’t go into the basket,” Griffiths said.

Burns led the Longhorns with 22 points. Hayden Bruhn added 18 points and Diego Sanchez 14.

Melrose (19-3), ranked second in Class 1A by MaxPreps.com, vaulted into a second-place tie with No. 1-ranked Logan in the district standings with a 2-2 record. Melrose has won two of three against Logan this season.

Third-ranked and defending state champion Fort Sumner (18-4), which Logan faces at home on Saturday, remains atop the district standings with a 4-0 mark.

Logan 74, Grady 19

The Longhorns started the game with a 13-2 lead en route to a 74-19 district victory Thursday at Grady.

Logan led 18-8 after the first quarter and 42-10 at intermission.
