  • Year in review: 2018 started with loss of jobs, officials

    Staff report|Dec 26, 2018

Editor's note: This is the first in a three-part series reviewing Quay County's 2018. Next week's edition will include a report of May through August. The beginning of 2018 began with a gut-punch to Tucumcari, when the foundering Kmart chain announced it was closing its store in the city in April. The closure led to the loss of dozens of jobs. Tucumcari's municipal judge was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, eventually costing him his job. Tucumcari's city manager announced...

    Ron Warnick|Dec 26, 2018

ALBUQUERQUE - With a request for an injunction still pending in a courtroom, the New Mexico Racing Commission on Friday refrained, as expected, from awarding a coveted sixth horse-racing license to applicants in Clovis, Tucumcari or Lordsburg. Commissioners, however, passed a resolution by a 3-1 vote Friday that stated the commission is "committed" to awarding a sixth license "once we get the attorney general's office approval or the judge grants or denies the petition," Commission Chairman Ray...

Ken's Ice Cream and More, a fixture along Tucumcari's Route 66 for decades, abruptly closed last week. The Facebook page for the restaurant at 1804 E. Route 66 Blvd. posted this message Thursday: "We have closed Ken's. Want to say thank you to everyone who has supported us. We will miss the great customers and wonderful friend(s) we have made in Tucumcari. You will be greatly missed." A check of the restaurant at lunchtime Thursday showed the building was locked with stools stacked on the...

  • Syria withdrawal gift to Russia

    Steve Hansen|Dec 26, 2018

Merry Christmas, Vladimir! As much as I’d like my column this week to reflect the holiday spirit, events of last week, the week before Christmas, I think demand some urgent attention Last week, President Donald Trump gave Russia’s Vladimir Putin a vast gift — Syria. Trump said U.S. troops are leaving, defending this move with the palpable lie that ISIS has been defeated. Russia praised the move almost before the words were out of Trump’s mouth. With the Mueller and New York prosecutor’s probes seeming to close in on the president, it seems tha...

  • Heroes stand tall in 'war on truth'

    Tom McDonald|Dec 26, 2018

SANTA ROSA — Could it be that Time magazine is abandoning the “great man” perspective on history, one in which larger-than-life individuals shape world events, for a “people’s history” narrative in which common people have the greater impact? That would explain why the magazine has chosen a group of people, rather than individuals, as its “Person of the Year” for three of the last five years. Or maybe it’s because the magazine is just catching up with the realization that people, collectively, have a bigger influence over world events than...

  • Let the 'Hope' notes stay up at river bridge

    The Taos News|Dec 26, 2018

Several days ago, a group of teens and supporters led by River Johnson, 17, zip-tied handwritten, laminated notes of care along the Río Grande Gorge Bridge in hopes that someone on the verge of suicide would reconsider and choose life instead. Within a few hours, the state highway department had taken the notes down. One man who saw officials taking down the notes called the newspaper, angry. “They shouldn’t do that. Those notes might help keep someone alive,” he said. This is not the first group to place notes of love and hope on the bridge...

  • Taking a look at some 'firsts'

    Leonard Lauriault|Dec 26, 2018

Picture this: A man pushing a bicycle through the library. Yes, that actually happened and right here in Tucumcari! A bystander asserted it must be a first. I can’t verify it as a first for all time, but it probably was a first for those of us present. As we approach Jan. 1, I wonder how many people actually will keep their resolutions. I suspect if any do, it’d be a first — at least for some of them. I haven’t made many New Year’s resolutions. Some I’ve made, I still keep; others, I’ve rethought and resolved to never make again. Most promises...

  • Rattlers fall to Robertson

    Ron Warnick|Dec 26, 2018

With the myriad problems wracking the Tucumcari boys basketball team, it was a wonder it kept the game close at all during a 42-36 loss against Robertson on Dec. 18 at the Snake Pit. The Rattlers found themselves hampered by poor free-throw shooting, dry spells on offense and the benching of one of their top scorers after a technical foul. In spite of those things, Tucumcari briefly took a lead midway through the fourth quarter before the Cardinals (3-4) rallied. Jesus Ramos led the Rattlers...
