  • Racino candidates number 11 now

David Grieder, Eastern New Mexico News|Aug 8, 2018

Just as a horse race can change suddenly and rather unexpectedly, so too, apparently, can the contest for the state’s sixth and last available racino license. The New Mexico Racing Commission notified The Eastern New Mexico News, a sister paper of the Quay County Sun, of its “final list” of letters of intent to apply for the license, which included three additional entities not included in the initial list released Monday after the 4:30 p.m. deadline that day. That brings the total tally of interested entities to 11, five of which are eyein...

  • Good turnout at Rattler Reunion

    Steve Hansen|Aug 8, 2018

A little thunder and lightning did nothing to diminish Friday's gathering of Tucumcari High School graduates at the Tucumcari Convention Center to kick off the Rattler Reunion. Graduates came in from all over the U.S. The classes of 1988 and 1968 seemed to dominate the gathering as grads and family members socialized and enjoyed a hearty meal of beef, gravy, potatoes and salad catered by the Tucumcari Elks Club. Meanwhile, Tucumcari Middle School students patrolled the room with water and tea...

  • Look for God's way in scripture

    Leonard Lauriault|Aug 8, 2018

One of our relatives works a restaurant in another town and because we eat there often, we’re friends with several other employees. Recently while eating with our relative (we’ll call her employee No. 1), another employee (No. 2) came to the table saying she needed to restock something at the beverage service area, but she’d looked all over the stockroom and couldn’t find the supplies. Employee No. 1’s response was, “Are you sure? I thought we had plenty of that.” So, No. 1 goes to the stockroom and almost before No. 2 could finish saying...

  • More money will not educate a child

    Albuquerque Journal|Aug 8, 2018

State District Judge Sarah Singleton is absolutely right when she points out that the “vast majority of New Mexico’s at-risk children finish each school year without the basic literacy and math skills needed to pursue post-secondary education or a career.” And she’s right when she notes that the majority of this state’s children can’t read or do math at grade level. Our state’s proficiency rates are downright appalling, and it’s unacceptable. Yes, we agree with her that education is vital to our democracy, and every child in this state can...

  • Start with real pollution, California

    Steve Hansen|Aug 8, 2018

Leave it to Californians. In the state whose air carries a permanent brown stain of exhaust while millions of cars waste millions of hours standing still in traffic, their new solution to environmental contamination is to outlaw plastic drinking straws. These are the same Californians who won’t give up the “freedom” of having their cars at work. They pat themselves on the back for giving up the right to sip beverages from sturdy plastic tubes while their cars continue to pump ozone and oxides of nitrogen into the stale air. I started using...
