  • Census: Tucumcari's population drops

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Sep 8, 2021

Tucumcari’s population dropped slightly during the 2020 census compared to 10 years ago, but its percentage decline was smaller compared to many of the city’s previous census counts. The actual count also significantly exceeded the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2019 estimate. According to data recently released on the Census website, Tucumcari’s population was 5,278 on April 1, 2020. That compares to the 5,363 people counted by the census on April 1, 2010. That represented a 1.6% decline during the past decade. Compared to many previous census counts,...

  • Museum sees increase in visitors

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Sep 8, 2021

Despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and a recent storm that damaged a storage building, Mesalands Dinosaur Museum director Loni Monahan is smiling pretty broadly these days. That's because the museum saw a record-breaking number of visitors and revenue this year despite several months still remaining in calendar 2021. Since the museum reopened March 1, Monahan said the museum has averaged 200 visitors a day on Fridays and Saturdays - its busiest days - and 150 visitors each day it was open. "W...

Most of the cases last week were in the Tucumcari ZIP code. The county's overall case total rose to 762 since the pandemic began in spring 2020, with 12 deaths. • Conscience should not be coerced

    Gordan Runyan, Religion columnist|Sep 8, 2021

As you’re reading your Bible, note the instances in which people try to coerce, bribe, or threaten others into complying with their will. I think you’ll see a pattern emerge rather quickly. First, the ones employing coercive means are the bad guys. Forcing people to comply with your will if you can is the work of a dastardly villain. This is true even if the villain has convinced himself that his own will is the best course for everybody. You might find the odd instance where an otherwise goo...

  • Answer muddled on America's safety after war

    St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Syndicated content|Sep 8, 2021

Is America safer after its 20-year war on terrorism in Afghanistan has resulted in the Taliban’s victory? The answer, like the war itself, is muddled. The lack of resolution should cause considerable discomfort to Americans who lived through the trauma of 9/11 and cheered the U.S. military’s quick routing of al-Qaida and its Taliban hosts in 2001. After the World Trade Center’s collapse, Americans had every right to believe President George W. Bush’s declaration from atop the wreckage that the United States would make the terrorists pay. In...

  • Divisions weakening democracy

    Steve Hansen, QCS correspondent|Sep 8, 2021

In three days, we will mark the 20th anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center that killed more than 3,000 Americans who were peacefully going about their business. As the nation watched in horror, two airliners flown by suicide bombers deliberately crashed into the towers over Manhattan and we kept up with news accounts of massive, frantic rescue efforts for hours until both towers collapsed, sending dust and debris cascading over Manhattan. The attack launched the U.S. into a war on terror that since then has continued with varying...

  • Scheller an example of leadership

    Rube Render, Local columnist|Sep 8, 2021

By now, most readers will have heard the name of Marine Lt Col. Stuart Scheller. He is the infantry battalion commander who went on Facebook to demand that senior military and political leaders take responsibility for the collapse in Afghanistan and the debacle at the Kabul airport. Of particular note in his statement was the colossal blunder that resulted in the closing of the air field at Bagram. Scheller went on to say that he was well aware of the consequences he faced as a result of his...

  • A shot in the dark

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Sep 8, 2021

A Hail Mary in the darkness delivered the Rattlers out of the darkness of a near-certain loss. Tucumcari quarterback Andrew Henderson-Clark connected on a 45-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Nathan Griego with no time left to give the Rattlers a come-from-behind 12-7 victory Friday evening over Loving at a darkened Rattler Stadium. The wild finish concluded a bizarre game where the coaches from both teams agreed to kick off about 20 minutes early and play just two quarters because the...

SANTA ROSA — After a four-year hiatus as head basketball coach at Santa Rosa High School, “Coach Eska” is back. Joe Esquibel soon will be trading in his job as principal of the middle school for head coach of Lions basketball — a job he lost four years ago despite a public outcry to keep him in the position. Superintendent Martin Madrid said Esquibel will remain athletic director but will have to give up his position as principal. Madrid said last week he chose Esquibel over two other candidates. He cited Esquibel’s passion for the sport as...
