Therapist Rhonda Gutierrez said the new program is a good way for seniors to be able to talk to someone about problems or just to be able to visit with other seniors who may not have anyone else at home....

    A California man died in a two vehicle crash Friday morning on Interstate 40 about eight miles east of Tucumcari, according to state police. At 1:19 a.m., New Mexico State police said officers responded about 1:19 a.m. Jesse Barnes, 72, of San Miguel, Calif., was pronounced dead at the scene, said Lt. Lance Bateman. Bateman said Barnes was westbound in a 2006 GMC pickup in the outside lane when a westbound tractor-trailer truck collided with the back of the pickup.     Two Tucumcari teens were arrested Friday, accused in connection with the theft of an assault rifle from a marked New Mexico State Police patrol unit. Police identified the two as Zach Hurd, 17, and Trenton Ward, 18. Each faces felony charges of receiving or transferring stolen property, tampering with evidence and conspiracy, said state police Lt. VFW Commander Fred Porter said this year was a great turn out of supporters to help put out the flags.     QCS photo: Jerrene Bradley Two terriers were uninjured after being rescued from beneath a grain silo. Two dogs were rescued Thursday from three stories underground. Gene Ross and his son Chris Ross, employees at Versatile Construction, were working when they could hear dogs barking from somewhere around the plant.     A 20-minute chase by state police Wednesday ended with the arrest of two Oklahoma residents connected to a burglary in Arizona, police said.     Grants were approved Wednesday at a special session of the City Commission from the Water Trust Board for improvements of three water wells at five mile park. For infrastructure improvements and upgrades, Resolution 2012-43, the city was awarded $50,000 with the city budgeting its 10 percent share of $5,000 for upgrades to the east end of Tucumcari.     Tucumcari and Logan middle schools are getting surprise grant money from the state for improving student test scores. Tucumcari Middle School will receive $13,463.91 and Logan Middle School is getting $3,328.16. The award recognizes the middle schools as one of just 48 schools in New Mexico earning a "Top Growth" designation from the state Public Education Department.     Tucumcari school teachers received a donation of $220 per teacher from the First Baptist Church. Teachers have been buying supplies out of their own pockets for years to make sure they had the tools essential in teaching the children, said First Baptist Church Pastor John Hinze.
